Health Issues: Head Injuries

The Fairmount Soccer Association has an abiding interest in the health and safety of our players. In the soccer community there is always concern about the potential for head injuries caused in any way, including heading the ball. In 2011, the Safety in Youth Sports Act was signed into law. The Act establishes standards for managing concussions and traumatic brain injuries. Although the Act applies only to student-athletes, and is therefore not binding on non-scholastic activities, the Eastern Pennsylvania Youth Soccer Association has decided to follow the guidance set forth in the Act. As an EPYSA member, Fairmount Soccer is obligated to abide by the Act, and has instituted the policies and procedures required by EPYSA. Included among the procedures is a requirement that all coaches – both intramural and travel – complete the Concussion Awareness program created by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
